School Materials for Students:
- School bag for books and homework
- # 2 pencils with erasers.
- Crayons
- A box of Kleenex for the classroom
- A bottle of Purell (waterless hand soap) Students in Grades 4-5 will also need:
- Notebook and filler paper (wide ruled)
- Blue and black ball point pens
- Book covers for textbooks
For safety reasons, rolling backpacks are not allowed for students in grades K-3
Attendance Procedures:
Absences: Children must bring back a note when they return to school.
Tardiness: Because important subjects are taught in the morning, all children need to get to school on time. Tardy students disrupt valuable class time. Students tardy more than 9 times may be classified as habitual truant. Attendance Records are marked “Tardy” when a student comes to school after 8:20 AM
Excessive absences and tardies will result will result in parents and students being reported to SART (School Attendance Review Team).
Dismissal: All students will be dismissed from designated gates according
to grade level. Please see the attached map of dismissal area.
Make sure your child has clear directions for after school arrangements.
If you pick your child up after school, please be prompt as there is no playground supervision after school.
You may contact the office for information on after school care.
Early Dismissal: Children will not be released to anyone until regular dismissal Time unless there is a scheduled Doctors/Dental appointment or family emergency.
Children will be released ONLY to those adults listed on their emergency cards. Be Prepared to show identification so that we may prevent unauthorized persons from attempting to make contact with your child.
Drop-off, Pick Up: No students should arrive before 7:40 AM Under any circumstances due to no supervision at that time. Students left on campus after 3PM will be reported to police except for those participating in an afterschool program.
Visitors:
All visitors must sign in with the office upon entering the campus.
Permits: Permit students who are frequently absent, tardy, picked up late or who are sent to the office for misbehavior more than twice may have their permits revoked.
Homework:
All children will be given homework. Homework is designed to supplement class work and to give the student the opportunity to practice the skills he/she has learned in class.
A regular home study time should be provided each day. If your child does not bring homework home please contact his/her teacher.
Textbooks and library books are the responsibility of the student until returned. Any students not returning books or other materials will be charged replacement costs.
School Rules:
Bennett-Kew students are expected to behave and conduct themselves in
such a manner so as not to disrupt the normal educational process. Please see our school discipline policy in this handbook.
All students must:
- Exercise self control.
- Respect the rights of others
- Respect school property and property of others.
- Use appropriate behavior in the cafeteria and the playground
- Stay in assigned areas.
- Follow each teacher’s classroom standards.
Students must not:
1. Fight (even if someone else start it)
2. Cuss or call names
3. Leave the school grounds without permission
4. Litter
5. Run (except during P.E.)
Uniforms:
All students are expected to wear school uniforms every day: Monday – Friday. Designated special dress days and spirit days will be announced by notices sent home to parents. White shirts with collar and navy blue pants/skirt are the standard school uniform.
For safety reasons, we discourage the wearing of black sports
Jackets and/or any oversized attire which may be deemed gang related.
Please Note: District policy states that hats are not to be worn to
school (except on rainy days).
All electronic devices (gameboys, cell phones, Ipods etc.) will be confiscated and can be picked up on Mondays. Please see school electronic policy.
Breakfast and Lunch:
Bennett-Kew students can participate in the school breakfast and lunch program.
All applications must be completed and returned to determine eligibility for free and reduced lunch. Until the application is turned in all students are required to pay for breakfast and/or lunch.
Breakfast will be served before school only from 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M.
Full price- $0.85
Reduced Price- $0.30
Lunch is served daily from 11:25 TO 1:00.
Full price- $1.35
Reduced price- $0.40
Soda pop and candy are not allowed except on special occasions such as field trips and class parties.
Parent Participations:
School Site Council, School Advisory and English Learners Advisory
Parent membership is required to receive Compensatory Education funds.
Meeting dates will be announced.
Volunteers are needed to work in libraries and classroom.
Each classroom will also need a room parent. Please sign up to help your teacher.
Research shows that Parent Participation leads to high standard achievement.
Vandalism- If you see anyone doing damage to the school building, parking lot, Dumpsters or school grounds, please call the office 310-680-5400, School Police 310-419-2785, City Police 310-412-5210. Reports of vandalism may be given anonymously.

Dismissal Procedures
Parents must check into the office to receive a visitor’s pass to come on campus. If your student has a younger or older sibling, please make arrangements with your Students to meet at one location everyday for pick up.
No students will be allowed to exit the front gate.
To ensure the safety of our Bennett-Kew students, please follow the dismissal procedures below:
Grades 2 & 4 - Dismissed at back gate on Dehn Street (all classrooms)
Grades 3 & 5 - Dismissed at back gate on Cherry Street (all classrooms)
Grades K & 1- Dismissed at front Dehn gate (rooms 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12)
Grades K - Dismissed at latchkey gate (room 2)
*Police will be called to pick up students left at school after 3:00pm. Please pick your student up on time!
