District Description:
-
Located in Los Angeles County, California, the Inglewood Unified School District serves approximately 17,750 students (in kindergarten through 12th grade) from the cities of Inglewood and Ladera Heights. In total, there are thirteen elementary schools and six secondary schools, many of which are on a year-round schedule. In addition, there is one preschool center with approximately 300 students and a community adult school with approximately 8,000 students.
The Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) serves a diverse population of students in an urban setting, with 58% Hispanic, 41% African American, and 1% other ethnicities, according to demographic information from the California Department of Education (CDE) for the 2002-2003 school year.
Inglewood's elementary schools are often considered to have ?defied the statistics. Despite the low average socioeconomic level of students district-wide, IUSD elementary schools have earned national and international recognition for their outstanding academic performance. Three Inglewood schools have earned the title of ?California Distinguished School? and one was recently named a ?Title I High Achieving School.? In a 2002 study conducted by the Pacific Research Foundation, five Inglewood elementary schools made the High-Performing, High-Poverty list.
The Inglewood Unified School District's strengths are demonstrated in its support from various partners, including local businesses, organizations, and institutions of higher learning. The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is one major partner, assisting the school district at the middle and high school levels in preparing students to enter and succeed at colleges and universities. Local businesses and organizations generously donate tens of thousands of dollars in funds and services annually to help expand opportunities for IUSD students.
The first Inglewood school opened in 1888; the Inglewood Unified School District was later founded in 1953. Thus, most Inglewood schools were constructed decades ago. In 1998, the school district embarked upon an extensive program to improve school facilities with the passage of the Measure K bond by Inglewood and Ladera Heights voters. Major Measure K projects completed since then include two all-weather running tracks and brand new classroom facilities at two IUSD elementary schools. The Measure K program will bring modernization repairs and new construction to 18 schools district-wide.
The Inglewood Unified School District currently employs 110 administrators/pupil services personnel, 824 teachers, and 643 support staff (as reported by the 2002-2003 CDE demographic data). The district is currently accepting applications for the following positions:
